The GPU stopped the work of the canvas' WebGL context (it took too long, e.g. a huge draw or a shader that loops for long, or it failed): the context is lost for good and nothing drawn shows any more, the canvas keeps what it last showed. Doesn't happen to content that stays within what the GPU can do in a frame
